How to Select the Perfect Martial Arts School: A Comprehensive Guide

Essential Considerations for Picking the Right Martial Arts School

When embarking on a martial arts journey, choosing the right school is a decision that can shape your experience and development. Lineage BJJ® is here to provide guidance on what to look out for.

1. Find a Martial Arts Style that Aligns with Your Goals:

There is a plethora of martial arts styles, but they can be broadly categorized into Punch-Kick, Throwing, and Grappling styles.

  • Punch-Kick styles, such as Karate, Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do, and Muay Thai, focus on strength, speed, flexibility, and athleticism.

  • Throwing arts like Judo, Aikido, and Hapkido utilize leverage, pins, chokes, and joint locks, making them suitable for various body types.

  • Grappling arts, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Japanese Jujitsu, emphasize leverage and defensive techniques, allowing individuals of all sizes to effectively defend themselves.

Keep in mind your primary objectives for pursuing martial arts – self-defense, fitness, competition, or social engagement. It's advisable to observe and even participate in trial classes at different schools, and don't hesitate to explore various styles.

2. Safety and Hygiene:

A clean training environment is crucial. Ask about the cleaning protocols of the school as this can help prevent staph infections, MRSA, and ringworm, which are common in martial arts schools.

Also, ensure there is an optimal student-to-teacher ratio and that the instructors are attentive to all students without favoritism. Live weapons should never be used in demonstrations as it is unnecessary and dangerous.

3. Transparency and Hidden Costs:

When considering the cost, don't be swayed by the initial monthly fees alone. Be vigilant about hidden fees such as belt testing fees, which can be exorbitant. Moreover, some schools may require you to purchase merchandise and training materials exclusively from them.

Inquire openly about all the costs associated with training and make sure that there are no hidden charges that will surprise you later on.
